Our FV Ambassador, Kyla Forsberg, owner and operator of Green River Cyclery and Busted Bike Cafe in Auburn, WA was one of 16 winners of this prestigious scholarships. She shares her story with us...
It's a story thats played out in bike shops across the country. Magdalena explains, “I've had people walk in and look right at me covered in grease, wrenching on bikes, and they still ask, “Do you have a mechanic here I can talk to?”
Traditionally, bike shops have been male-dominated; male owned, male employed and male mechanics. This year with the help of sponsor Quality Bicycle Parts (QBP), United Bicycle Institute (an accredited mechanics school), along with SRAM, RockShox, Park Tool, Jagwire, Saris, Michelin, Surly, Liv, Ergon, and Dero.set out to help bring parity to the bike service area within the shops. Sixteen bike mechanic scholarships were given to woman all around the country. I happened to be one of them.
