You Can Do a Lot in Just 2 Days
BY AMBER HOADLEY
My friend Alyssa and I decided (somewhat at the last minute) that we wanted to spend Sunday and Monday biking through the Grand Teton National Park. We loaded up our bikes, camping gear, and food, and hit the road early on Sunday morning and drove straight to Driggs, Idaho. It only took us about 3 hours to get there. We had decided to ride up "Ski Hill road" since everyone had talked about it being so scenic. It was a 10 mile climb up to the summit, and worth every inch! We got to the top and stopped for some photos. After descending all the way back down, we made some food and then drove to our campsite. We set up camp and planned out our ride for the following day. As soon as the sun was low enough in the sky, we were out!
Monday morning came and we made coffee before packing up camp. We drove through Jackson Hole and over the pass (about 40 minutes) into The Tetons. Those mountains take my breath away every single time. Absolutely beautiful. Alyssa and I drove down scenic Mormon Row and took more photos before changing into our kits. We loaded up all our tools and snacks and set out on the 45-mile loop through the park. I'll admit, we never looked at an elevation map; just set out into new scenery and unseen views. The ride was perfect. We had great weather the entire time, and not too much climbing, or extreme wind. We were both in disbelief over how close we lived to the Tetons (about 4 hours total drive time), and inspired to continue such adventures. Its amazing what you can do in just a day or two. When we finished our ride, we sat in the back of the Subaru and had cold drinks and snacks while talking about our favorite parts of the ride. We had been just a few feet away from a herd of bison... its amazing how small you can feel when you're out in the mountains. Moral of the story: you have an entire day off... where will you go?
